actually need to start from the end, I first read the book Mirrors city, and later returned to Bastard of Istanbul . This second novel by Elif Safak was lying with me for some time. Tab was pressed somewhere around 20 pages and not in the least tempted me to give her another chance. But it was the reading of the city Luster meant that I reached after long forgotten, the author's second book. Mirrors city drew me to the extent that I forgot about the whole Christmas and the festive crowd of food and almost sleeping. It all meant that absorbed all the good book could not wait to return to Bastard of Istanbul . Repentant, apologizing with a thick novel, the wildly colored covers pulled out a book from the very bottom of the stack that was on it to continue and finished (actually started re) reading. I can not say that the book sucked me more (because I take this I forgot about all the other vital functions and responsibilities), each of them is different - Mirrors dreamy town, and the Bastard of Istanbul touching and sometimes funny. How wonderful writer Elif Safak is evidenced by the fact that each of her three books (remember flea Palace), which previously appeared on the Polish market is different. Though each of them wrote a different author, different hand and mind. The Flea Palace describes daily life in Istanbul house (in our case we would call a town house) Mirrors City magical power of love and magic, and the Bastard of Istanbul brings shocking secrets hidden power and forgiveness. I can not then wait for the Black Milk issued, which promises to Forest Books.
Turning to the controversial Bastard ... how much this book will surprise and what topics may be moved by the fact that the author after its publication in Turkey punishable by three years' imprisonment. The words uttered by one of the heroes of the book, the naming the massacre of Armenians by Turks genocide were brought on trial for slandering her Turkishness.
two books, actually all three ( Flea Palace too) that are not yet available in India and all I've read are not the easiest book to read. Despite the fact that there is something in them that makes this apparent confusion, which may seem a story told by the author turns into a clear narrative often relate to difficult issues, like life, but for a different culture may be misunderstood. Despite this, I can not agree with the opinion that every next book Safak is worse (and these are met.) Do not know if my question is ripe for the Turkish prose writer, however, whether the formation of her talent (which would be understandable, just as I understand it better) but I personally each subsequent Safak's novel seems to be better. Pokusiłabym even to declare that better than Flea Palace, which so many places in the first place.
do not know which of those books I'd choose as the best. Each of them captivated me, something quite different.
The bastard of Istanbul intertwined destinies of two families whose roots go back to Turkey. Men in these families play a role in connecting them to cells, sometimes even unconsciously. However, predominant in their women, because they have the final say and they keep the whole family at bay.
Elif Safak second book is the story of a young Turczynce named Zeliha, who breaks free from the existing norms and customs of the Turkish shocking not only his style quite controversial - garish costumes, makeup and jewelry but also a courageous decision of the birth of an illegitimate child. Zeliha nearly twenty years no one has said who the father of her daughter, even the Asya is not able to pull it from his mother. Zeliha and Asya live in Istanbul in a house full of women, in which four generations live under one roof perfectly understand, operate in a world without men. And those in the Turkish family die young, most of them barely surviving forty years.
The only man with the family, who are still alive is Mustafa, the brother of Zelihi lived for twenty years in America. Linked there with Rose, an American traveler educating a daughter, półormiankę, does not establish any contact with his family, who stayed in Istanbul. Only a strange fate binding Amy - daughter of Rose and Asye make Mustafa returned to his home.
These apparently unrelated to the family begins to approach the past and the truth. Because Bastard of Istanbul a book about discovering the truth and reconciliation with her, no matter how painful was. Safak skillfully combines the past and the need to reconcile with it the need niezapominania about what it was, with its own history.
The whole book is made up of several chapters, whose names make up a recipe for asure - dessert shrouded in mystery story, with a decisive role in it and also refer to the aromatic components.
Mirrors city, however, are quite different story from Bastard of Istanbul because literally seething up magic. In this book about the fate of the family all tangled lives. They speak not only birds, but the water jugs and spices. This is a story that seems to reflect the many mirrors and create a title with them a sort of kaleidoscope of discrete, but still a fabulous merging the whole story.
heroes Luster city characters are so different that sometimes can to wonder what exactly made the fate of all those people combined. Isabel - a beautiful and sad wife, waiting for any evidence of the love of his ever-busy, intelligent man. Hiding a secret (and here, these two books have something in common), spiritually connected with the Old - the mistress of witchcraft, who once saved her life. Miguel - impulsive, attractive man, a wise brother Antonio, who will take over Heritage House. Heroes Safak whole lot of mystery surrounds characters who only seem to have no impact on their fate. Ester, who mitzvah prophetic dreams, a woman's face and półgąsienicy półmotyla - Zulfe disfigured, a neighbor whose intentions are not entirely good, and probably Inquisitor Alonso Perez de Herer, led by a mysterious voice. It's just part of the characters that appear in the book. I only seem to combine well Pereirów kin. Well, which is the symbol of memory that stores all sorts of events. Not necessarily happy, and not necessarily having a positive impact on their fate. Mirrors of the city can be described as dreamy while a wild story that sometimes you have to be treated with a wink to another time write yourself into the content without the possibility of secession.
can not determine which of the two books I read recently is better. Each one is different, a painfully realistic pain to another magical. I think that to understand them both and let them tear you need to read both Bastard of Istanbul and Mirrors city. The only question from the start. The answer to that question I leave you dear readers returning, those who have not yet experienced the colorful world of magic Elif Safak.
